In The Butter Scene, a critical feminist lens is turned to one of cinema’s most controversial rape scenes. Interviews provided by Bernardo Bertolucci and Maria Schneider regarding their experiences shooting Last Tango in Paris (1972) are treated as soliloquies, meshed together as a dialogue, thus exposing the murky territory between artistic exploration and exploitation in the cinematic image.
